One of the most important computers of the 1980's turns 30 years old tomorrow. The ZX Spectrum kickstarted the entire UK videogame industry. A combination of ease of programming and affordability meant many programmers flocked to the system, and many of them are still working in the industry today.

However, the system was predominantly popular in Europe, and even the most popular games on the system have not been followed up or turned into franchises so you'll be forgiven for not knowing about many of these guys.

Dizzy (Dizzy series)
Head & Heels (Head Over Heels)
Miner Willy (Manic Miner)
Sabreman (Sabrewulf)
Horace (Horace Goes Skiing)
Magic Knight (Spellbound)

I may follow this up with a few more. :)

cool tribute, I loved Spellbound. One of my other favorites was Back 2 Skool. A game based upon a school kid making havoc in school while knocking out teachers and punching other pupils. Where would you get a game like that nowadays? lol

Monty Mole and Eric from Skool Daze are in my list of characters for this project. I may still do them too :) Glad you like it!

I bet ZX was pretty good back in it's day, I've even heard some japanese games were ported to it.

Dizzy reminds me of some white Kirby + Bubbles-thing with punching gloves.

Ah yes I'm sure you heard of the ill fate of "Sabreman Stampede"? Sabreman was going to have an ongoing series... too bad.

I understand Sabreman Stampede was an updated version of the Donkey Kong Racing game first shown for GameCube. But hey, we got a brief Sabreman comeback AND Jetpac Refuelled. Rare, at least, is trying to keep its classics alive :)

Very nice, I'm not familiar with that console, (due to being American, and only young enough to of played the NES, SuperNES, and consoles afterwords) but regardless great homage to this system, and it's games here. :)

I have heard of "Sabrewolf" though, due to it being made by Rareware though, and his cameo role in "Banjo Tooie." (I think he had a GBA game to.)

That's Sabreman! He is indeed the one. He appeared in four games on the Spectrum, with a 5th cancelled. Oddly, his third game was ported to the Famicom Disk System. I figured I'd represent him as a younger man here, as it was the early 1980's!

Dizzy was probably the biggest character on the system though. Treasure Island Dizzy was ported to the NES (and just about everything else), and one of his later games has just been remade for iOS/Android.

That's pretty cool, maybe I'll keep an eye for that game. :)
